Grandparent’s Prayer for a New Driver
Dear Lord, the newest driver on the road is my beloved grandchild. Why does this exciting accomplishment elicit such joy in my grandchild and dread in me? Fear for my new driver threatens to overwhelm me. It’s dangerous out there, God! As an inexperienced driver, will my grandchild know how to react in a crisis? And what about distracted for impaired drivers who share the road with my grandchild? It’s just plain scary.
When each of my children got their driver’s licenses, I attached a guardian angel clip to their car visors. I will do the same for my grandson. The idea of an angel riding with my grandchild comforts me, but in my heart, Lord, I know a piece of metal can’t keep my grandchild safe. Please help my grandchild to drive cautiously, to stay alert, to always be aware of the awesome responsibility of getting behind the wheel.
I will trust in You to guide and protect this precious young person. I’ll be praying right alongside You. We’ve always been a team, and I’m counting on You now, more than ever. You’ve never let me down. Thank You, God.

About This Prayer
Unlike some of his high school classmates, my grandson Winston didn’t find a shiny new car waiting for him in the driveway on his sixteenth birthday. Instead, he discovered his grandfather Jeff’s five-year old Ford F-150 pickup truck and he was thrilled! Not only is that truck a legacy, it’s safe. Much as Jeff cherishes his truck, he adores Winston more, and he trusts those 5000+ pounds of steel and aluminum and all those safety features to protect his beloved grandson.
Still, I worry and there’s a reason. One night six years ago, my then-twenty-six-year-old daughter was driving home when a drunk driver hit her, totaling her car and shattering her ankle and tibia. Brooke’s years of driving experience and her pristine driving record didn’t prevent that impaired driver from changing her life forever.
So at those times I know Winston is driving, especially at night, I’ll be praying fervently. Since I can’t always be in the passenger seat with him, I’ll trust God to be there. With the Lord and Winston’s guardian angel riding along with him, I’ll breathe a little better.
7 Timely Tips for the Teen Driver
Hitting the road with that shiny new driver’s license can be both exciting and daunting for the teen driver. Following seven suggestions, gleaned from experienced grandparents and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NTHSA), will promote a safe ride for the new driver.
- Make sure to drive a safe, well-maintained car.
- Always wear a seatbelt and require all passengers to do the same.
- Limit the number of people riding in the car.
- Eliminate distractions like cell phone calls, texting, eating and grooming.
- Obey all laws, especially speed limits.
- Avoid driving when drowsy or otherwise impaired.
- Drive defensively. Expect other drivers to make mistakes.
