capture-beaufort-4Description
The Parish of St. Helena Church in Beaufort SC, established in 1712, is one of the oldest active churches in North America. The present building dates from 1724 and sits in a grove of moss draped trees inside an enclosed church yard full of ancient gravestones. Although the church building itself is not open during the day for prayer, the church yard itself is a wonderful haven where you can walk under the cool shade and mediate and pray.

How I used this place of prayer
We were visiting Beaufort on a very hot and humid July day and the shade of the church yard was a very welcome relief from the heat and sun. As we walked through the church yard I had time to meditate on those who have come before us in the faith and how this ground had been hallowed by the feet of so many worshipers. I discovered on the church website that they hold several prayer services during the week and I hope to attend next time I’m in the area.

Personal Tips
There is a parking lot across the street on the front of the church where you can park your car in the shade. The church could also be reached on foot by walking a few blocks from the waterfront and was within walking distance of the Rhett House Inn Bed and Breakfast where we stayed.
