My personal experiences with morning prayer
Through trial and error I have found a daily morning prayer routine that works for me. Every weekday I set the alarm earlier than needed to be dressed and ready to get on with my day. I put on my workout clothes. I then embark on a morning prayer walk through my neighborhood that keeps me healthy in body, mind and spirit.
I have discovered that there’s something special about praying first thing in the morning because it sets my mind on God’s nearness before my mind starts processing all of the tasks that need doing that day and I get caught up in fixing things.
Being out in nature in the morning enhances my feelings of freshness, reawakening and newness. In winter I may be walking in the dark before dawn and end my walk just as the first grays of mornings emerge. In the summer I start walking when the sky is already light enough to tell if it’s clear or cloudy. By the time I finish my walk on summer mornings, the sun’s rays are beaming brightly and intensely over the tree tops.
I always have my phone with me, so I often stop to photograph the beautiful morning light illuminating the world.
I have found that during all seasons, there is something timeless, magnificent and spiritual about directly experiencing the dawn of a new day as the Psalmists in the Bible so beautifully express.
