Description
The Church of the Cross (Episcopal) is an incredibly beautiful Gothic cypress church built before the Civil War overlooking a bluff on tidal marsh of the May River. It had rose colored windows that can be opened during worship to reveal a sweeping view of the rising and falling tide. The worship services are very powerful. They are very traditional liturgically yet at the same time, they fill you with the joy of praising God.

The church itself is only open during the week during special times for visitors to learn about the church and it’s history. (There were once beehives in the church walls and they made “holy honey.”) However the church yard itself is a wonderful spot for prayer and meditation when sitting on the benches that overlook the May River.

How I used this place of prayer
My sister and I happened to be exploring the little town of Bluffton and came to the church. We were disappointed to find the church locked and began looking for information on when Sunday services were held so we could attend. We discovered a well dressed man we assumed was a gardener pulling a few weeds out of a church flower bed and inquired about service times. Imagine our surprise when we attended service on Sunday and the “gardener” was dressed in a white robe. He was the priest!

Personal Tips
After the service they have a time of refreshments in the fellowship hall – and we enjoyed the pimento cheese finger sandwiches. They also have a Saturday evening service.
