Secret number one of how to pray to God: Get to know God.

The Bible tells us that God is always listening and wants to take an active role in our lives.  Prayer is how we get in touch with God.

Christians pray to a very personal God as expressed in God the Creator, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Jesus walked the earth as one of us, so he understands our nature, personalities and problems completely.  Through His saving power by dying on the cross and being resurrected from death,  Jesus makes bridged the gap between God and us and made it possible to pray.  Having a personal relationship with Jesus makes us able to come before our Holy Father God even though we aren’t perfect or worthy of what we are asking God to do for us.

Secret number two of how to pray to God: Honestly express yourself to God

Many people pray by having a conversation with God, talking with him like you would talk to a friend.  Others use written prayers.  Even tears can be a form of prayer.  The important part is that you are sharing something of yourself with God in a way that feels meaningful to you.

In the Bible Jesus teaches us how to pray to God.  Jesus focused on the sincerity of the person praying, not on how the prayer sounds to other people.   Jesus also emphasized not trying to convince God that we’re worthy of getting something but rather coming to God with an open, humble attitude.  Jesus also told us not to get caught up in using a lot of religious sounding words.  Instead he told us that God already knows what we need even before we ask.

Secret number four of how to pray to God: Learn how to hear from God and recognize his responses to our prayers

One of the biggest mistakes people make in prayer is to have a one-sided conversation with God.  They tell God what they need and then they end their prayer time.  However, prayer is done in the context of a personal relationship with God, so it’s natural that God will respond in some way.

I have learned through personal experience that although every prayer isn’t immediately answered by a positive change of events, God always responds.  Even when circumstances don’t change for the better, God responds to our prayers by being there for us, sending others to help us and guiding us in our times of need.  That’s why I believe that God can help us find an answer to every prayer.
