Resilience is the ability to use your inner strength as we all as your supportive community to rebound from life problems.  This resilience prayer helps you find God’s help and the outside help you need to rebound.

Resilience Prayer for Strength and Help in Rebounding from Life Problems

Dear God,

I’m having a life problem that’s hard to get through and I’m trying to rebound.

Please help me with what I need to be resilient physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Here’s my specific problem __________________________

Why it’s so challenging _____________________________________

This is how I’m feeling right now ____________________________________

God, please increase my physical resilience.

Help me to sleep well.

Give me breaks and time off from stress and responsibilities.

Heal me.

Direct me to the right doctors, medical care, medications and therapies.

Increase my resolve to eat well and exercise.

Keep me patient when I need time to heal and keep me from overdoing it when I need to rest.

Increase my stamina.

God, please increase my mental resilience.

Teach me to think positively as it says in the Bible:

“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think on these things.  (Philippians 4:9 NIV)

Help me to keep worry and anxiety under control by praying to you believing that you are there and that you care as it says in the Bible:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, b prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your requests to God.  And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 4:6,7 NIV)

Guide me to good people who will listen to me, understand me and give me perspective.

Open my eyes to helpful information so I can make a step-by-step plan about what to do next.

Remind me of how you brought me through other difficulties in the past so I can be confident that you can do it again.

Increase my patience with myself, my situation and with others.

Clear my mind and give me discernment, wisdom and understanding.

Create a willingness to let people help me and pray for me.

May I stop dwelling on my mistakes and letting them define me, but let me learn from them and go forward as it says in the Bible:

I do not yet consider myself yet to have taken hold of it (being perfect) but one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I persevere on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.  (Philippians 3:13,14 NIV)

God, please increase my emotional resilience.

Show me how to replace fear with trust that you are always with me as it says in the Bible:

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”  (Isaiah 41:10 NIV)

Help me not to lose hope as it says in the Bible:

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.   (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV)

Heal my broken heart as it says in the Bible:

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”  (Psalm 47:2 NIV)

Be with me in my times of grief and sadness as it says in the Bible:

“Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.”  (Psalm 126:4 NIV)

Teach me how to forgive those who have hurt me as it says in the Bible:

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in in Christ God forgave you.”  (Ephesians 4:32 NIV)

Increase my spiritual resilience.

Help me to become closer to you.

Fill me with the truth of my great value to you and that I am always in your care as Jesus says in the Bible:

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?  Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside of your Father’s care.  And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”  (Matthew 0:29-3 NIV)

Remind me that what I’m going through has happened to others, and you won’t let me be pushed beyond my limits to endure but you will always provide a way through as it says in the Bible:

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man.  And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what yu can bear.  But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so you can stand up under it.”  (I Corinthians 10:13 NIV)

Use my sufferings productively to build my character and resilience as it says in the Bible:

“…Because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance character, and character, hope.  And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”  (Romans 5:3-5 NIV)

I reaffirm that with your help, I can face anything as it says in the Bible:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13  NIV)

Thank you that when I am weak, you are strong as it says in the Bible:

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.  Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest in me.”  (2 Corinthians 12:8,9 NIV)

Keep me close to those who can give me support, prayers and encouragement in my faith.

Turn my recovery from this setback into a powerful testimony of your grace and power in my life.

I affirm that you are now renewing my strength as it says in the Bible:

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faith.”  (Isaiah 40:31 NIV)

Please help me find the outside help and support I need to be resilient.

Help me find refuge with those who love me.

Send people who will listen to me, give me good counsel, pray with me and hold me accountable for my progress.

Give me a sense of identity and belonging to a family, a group, a community or a church where I can be helped and I can also help others in return.

Provide for my material needs and financial stability.

Guide me to mentors, counselors, teachers and religious leaders who can give me direction.

Open the doors for medical care to keep my health stable.

Please help me believe that with your help, I am resilient.

Finally God, I take heart knowing that this difficulty won’t last forever.  I claim the promise in the Bible that says:

“His favor lasts a lifeline:  weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”  (Psalm 30:5 NIV)

I thank you for giving me your strength to make me resilient and I look forward to the rejoicing that will come when I am stronger than ever on the other side of this setback.

Resilience is the process of gaining or regaining strength and stability.  It is the ability to keep functioning during difficulty.  It engages our resources of persistence and perseverance.  And it requires adaptability,  a determined mindset and the willingness to learn from failures.

The opposite of resilience

The opposite of resilience is a defeated attitude.  This leads to feelings of helplessness, vulnerability, weakness and dependence.

Life problems that require resilience

Resilience is something we all need during our lives.  We may need to come back from an injury or a physical illness.  We may have experienced a mental health difficulty.  We may be dealing with a life loss such as death of a loved one, divorce or natural disaster.  We could be recovering from a financial blow, unemployment or a personal failure.   We may need spiritual resilience when life circumstances, disappointments or religious persecution have attacked our faith in God.

What the experts say about resilience

I recently attended a seminar by an expert on psychological resilience.  I wasn’t sure what it would be about, but I expected it to be about how to bounce back from hard times.  The expert described working with high-risk teenagers and how research has discovered that there’s more to resilience than teaching someone good coping skills.

Good counseling made a huge difference, but if the teens didn’t have a variety of outside resources and help, they were less likely to rebound.  These necessary outside resources included somewhere to belong, people who loved them, economic stability, and to be held accountable for what they did.

The expert concluded that in order for anyone to rebound well, we need people around us who have the capacity to come alongside us and help.

As I listened to the expert, I thought in terms of the crucial resources our Christian community provides is in helping us rebound.

Things that our Christian community provide that helps us rebound.

A strong sense of identity in who we are in God’s eyes.

Prayer support that gives us strength.

The love and support of people who love us and are there for us.

Physical assistance such as meals, transportation etc.

Accountability through small life groups.

Structure through worship services and personal daily prayer and study habits.

Hope and belief that God has a plan for our lives.
