If you are the victim of someone lying about you, use prayer to strengthen, help and defend yourself.  A person who lies or is a constant liar can do a lot of damage to your career, finances, reputation, personal relationships and your emotions.  God operates through justice and truth and the Bible has many promises we can pray to protect ourselves from a person who lies and from liars.

Becoming a victim of a person who lies has gotten more widespread with social media where a liar can get a bigger audience by lying online.  Here is a prayer strategy to use when someone is lying about you.

Prayer When Someone is Lying About You

Dear God of all truth, I come to you today suffering because of a person who is lying about me.

I pray to you as the ultimate truth of the universe.  I claim this promise from Jesus, “I am the way, the truth and the life.”  (John 14:2 NIV.)  I thank you God for all of your characteristics that embody truth.  I thank you that your truth is real, reliable, just, perfect, powerful, pure, honest, strong, irrefutable, healing and life giving.

I invoke the power of the Holy Spirit, my advocate.  I claim this promise about my situation, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.  “ (John 16:13 NIV)

I now lay before you the lies that have been used against.  Here is what has been said about me that isn’t true __________________________________________________________________.

I thank you, Jesus, that you understand what I’m going through because people lied about you when you walked the earth.  You suffered and were crucified because of lies.  You confronted the people who were lying about you by saying, “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”  (John 8:44 NIV)

You say that liars are doing evil and are acting selfish motivations that oppose Your truth.  I ask that you cover me with your protection because I cannot face these forces on my own.  You alone can protect me and save me.  I now claim the promises of your protection from the Bible:

“I will protect them from those who malign them.”  (Psalm 12:5 NIV)

“May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope, Lord, is in you.”  (Ps. 25:21 NIV)

“But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.”  (2 Thessalonians   3:3 NIV)

I now pray specifically about the aspects of my life that need protection as a result of the lies about me.

My reputation __________________________________________________________

My Christian witness _____________________________________________________

My credibility ___________________________________________________________

My family _______________________________________________________________

My livelihood______________________________________________________________

My relationships ___________________________________________________________

My freedom _______________________________________________________________

My emotions_______________________________________________________________

I now pour out my emotions to you about the lies that have been told about me.

My feelings of hopelessness, fear, stress about _________________________________________.

My feelings of anger and sense of injustice about _____________________________________________________

My feelings of betrayal because __________________________________________________

My feelings of wanting to seek revenge and get even __________________________________

I now take a firm stand for the truth as you tell us in the Bible,

“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.   Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place.”  (Ephesians 6:13, 14 NIV)

I stand my ground against these lies with all of the power and authority given to me by my Savior, Jesus Christ, who is my advocate and defender.   I will not allow these lies to rob me of my joy nor destroy my confidence.  I will not retreat and I will not lose my faith, because “Greater is He who is within me than he who is in the world.”  ( I John 4:4)

I pray for your ongoing and specific guidance about how to defend myself against these lies.  Please speak to me, giving me insight as to whether I should act and find legal help, speak up, talk or confront the lying person, or present evidence or witnesses for the truth.  On the other hand, please direct me if it’s better for me to ignore the lies and prove them false by my own character and behavior.  I now seek your guidance, praying that you will prevent me from acting until I have control of my emotions and tongue.  Please guide me now ________________________________

I now pray that you will give me an assurance of your presence with me, no matter what.   I pray for relief from stress, for a good night’s sleep, for nurturing friends, for sanctuaries where I can escape and find rest, for truthful people who will guide me, for loving people who will believe me and for spiritual friends who will pray for me and with me.

I now put into your hands all of my thoughts of how justice might be served toward the person who has lied about me.  I thank you that you are the just judge who cares for the powerless and who sees all hearts and knows what is done in secret.  Thank you that you will ultimately judge everyone by their deeds.

I pray that the person who has lied about me will see the error of their ways and will repent and turn back to you.  I pray that they will be prevented from continuing in their destructive ways and prevented from hurting others.

I thank you that although this seems nearly impossible to me, I thank you that with you all things are possible.

I end my prayer trusting that you are my strength and shield, a very present help in time of trouble. (Psalm 46:1)  May your truth ever strengthen and protect me now and forever.  Amen.

About this prayer about people who tell lies about us

What is lying?

The dictionary defines lying as knowingly making false statements or saying or writing things that aren’t true.  It can also be done by deliberately making a false impression.  The person lying knows that what they are saying isn’t true and by saying it they intend to be deceitful and manipulative.

People are motivated to lie for all sorts of self serving purposes – revenge, personal gain, jealousy, grudges, power and manipulation, bullying, anger, hiding guilt or avoidance of punishment.

Lying is a spiritual battle

I wrote this prayer when a friend lost a devastating lawsuit because the accuser was such a convincing liar.  My friend and his family were in absolute shock because they had hoped that the truth would be apparent to the jury.  I struggled as I attempted to pray for this situation and began looking into what the Bible has to say about those who tell lies.

The more I researched the more alarmed I became at how diabolical lying can be. Lying is a spiritual battle and not an easy thing to endure or combat.  It is truly spiritual warfare and very destructive to individuals, families, churches and businesses.

The Bible is full of instances of lying people who pervert justice.  Truth telling is the cornerstone of faith and community.  The Ten Commandments say, “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”  (Exodus 20:16 NIV)  In fact, in the Garden of Eden, mankind fell because they believed a lie about God told by the devil.

Praying for those who lie about us

Because liars are doing something evil, we walk a fine line when we’re trying to pray about those who have lied about us.  The tricky part comes when we want to stand in judgment against them and do to them what they have done to us.

It’s quite natural to feel this way, and that’s why we need supernatural power and guidance in prayer.

First of all, I believe in telling God how you feel about a person or a situation, because I believe he cares and he wants you to trust him with your darkest thoughts and deepest sorrows.  Prayer allows time and space for us to tell God our feelings and describe what the lie has done to our lives and to those we love.

However in my struggles to pray for those who have wronged me, I have found that God wants to give me a healthy understanding of my own shortcomings so I can be prevented from seeking revenge or harboring hate, anger and bitterness.

Jesus says, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.  For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged.”   (Matthew 7:1,2 NIV)   And Jesus also says, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”  (Matthew 5:44 NIV)

Saint Paul quotes other Bible passages when he says, “Do not repay anyone evil for evil…Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay, ‘ says the Lord.  To the contrary ‘if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head. ‘ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”  (Romans 12:17-21 NIV)

It’s wise to seek the help of Christian friends, pastors and counselors to deal with the fallout of lies in our life.  It keeps us from judging and punishing the liar in inappropriate ways.
