Chinese New Year Prayer of Blessing

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you that in all cultures the New Year means a chance for a fresh start and a new beginning.  We pray especially for our Chinese brothers and sisters as they celebrate Chinese New Year that they will come into a deeper knowledge of You.  Thank you for putting the hunger for better times ahead and the hope for renewal of goodness and health into every heart for your purpose of motivating us to find Jesus who is our Redeemer and friend.   Thank you that Jesus died on the cross to sweep clean our sins and make it possible for us to have new life in a relationship with Him that brings prosperity to our souls.

And now we pray these traditional New Year’s greeting as a blessings for their spiritual prosperity.

Traditional greeting: “May your wealth [gold and jade] come to fill a hall.”

Our blessing: May your wealth of knowledge of the one true God, fill your heart and spirit to overflowing.  (See John 7:37)

Our blessing: May God’s perfect and beautiful will be done in your life.  (See Matthew 6:10)

Our blessing:  May you hear Jesus knocking at the door of your heart and open up so you, dear Jesus our true source of happiness,  can come in and commune.   (See Revelation 3:20)

Traditional greeting: “May all your wishes be fulfilled.”

Our blessing:  May you learn to pray in the name and character of Jesus so you might fulfill God’s promise that God will give us so much more than we even know to ask for.   (See Ephesians 3:20)

Our blessing:  May you come to know Jesus so that you might be able to experience the kind of joy that is not based on circumstances, the lasting kind of joy that no one can take away from you.   (See John 15:11)

Tradtional greeting: “May you hear [in a letter] that all is well”

Our blessing: May you become like the seed in the good soil in the parable of the sower that yields a hundredfold from what God has planted in your heart.  (See Mark 4:8)

Our blessing: Seek Jesus and His Kingdom.  When He is found, you will soon forget all other concerns of life except your relationship with God, just like a merchant who finds a pearl of great value and sells everything he owns to buy it.  (See Matthew 13:45, 46)

About this prayer

We were in Singapore during Chinese New Year when I visited St. Andrews Cathedral.  I happened upon a group of people in one of their smaller meeting rooms who were finishing up a Christian church service.  At the back of the room there were small bags of fruit and food to celebrate Chinese New Year.   This Chinese New Years prayer is in the spirit of our brothers and sisters in Christ who find new and meaningful ways to enjoy the traditional celebrations of family gatherings in new ways appropriate to both their culture and their faith .
