Autumn, Fall and Harvest Prayer
Dear Lord of the Harvest,
Thank you for creating the beauty of the fall season as autumn spreads your glorious splendor across the earth.
We praise you for the joy of the harvest, new beginnings, cool air, and the graceful cascade of falling leaves.
We are blessed by your good earth that has faithfully yielded its bounty and begins to settle softly into your embrace of coming winter rest.
We bow in thankfulness for your provisions of another good harvest that is part of your promise to provide seedtime and harvest and to bless our fields and those who sow and those who reap.
Autumn reminds us to open our eyes to the spiritual fields we walk through every day. Jesus tells us, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send our laborers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:37,38 NIV)
May we always be diligent harvesters in your fields of grace that many hearts may overflow with gratefulness for your provision, salvation and love.
Amen.
Autumn, Fall and Harvest Celebrations in the Bible
In the Old Testament, God instructs his people to celebrate two specific harvest festivals in order to thank Him for what the land produced. Both of these are found in Exodus 23:14-16.
The Feast of Weeks (Shavout) or First Fruits celebration
This celebration was held at the beginning of the harvest season and acknowledged the goodness of the “first fruits” or the first of the ripe grain and crops brought in from the fields.
The Feast of Ingathering (Sukkot) at the end of the harvest season
This feast was celebrated at the completion of the harvest when all had been gathered into the granaries and barns. It is celebrated between the end of September and the end of October according to the Jewish calendar.
The instructions to share the agricultural harvest with the less fortunate
As part of the harvest, God further instructs the Israelites to leave some of the crops behind in the fields so the poor could go and gather it for themselves. (Deuteronomy 24:19)
The Spiritual Harvest We Learn About From Fall and Autumn.
The Bible also uses harvest as a spiritual reminder of the call for us to be spiritually productive.
Scriptures tell us that in the same way God supplies seed to the sower and from it bread for food during harvest time, he also supplies the good seeds of grace we plant in our world and a large harvest of righteousness. (2 Corinthians 9:10)
We are encouraged not to become weary in doing good because we will eventually reap a harvest if we don’t give up. (Galatians 6:9)
