To calm anxiety, this prayer can help. Anxiety often comes from the stress of doing something such as flying in an airplane that causes you to feel extremely worried, uncomfortable or fearful. Anxiety can also be a chronic disorder where you have general feelings of fear or dread most of the time. The following anxiety calming prayer will enable you to tap into God’s help to get through your times of anxiety.
1. First, ask God to help you pinpoint the things that make you feel anxious and fearful.
Common circumstances include:
social anxiety and feeling rejected
fear of flying
performance anxiety (extreme worry that a task you do will not live up to high standards)
cancer and other serious disease diagnosis
separation anxiety (fear of having to go it alone.)
worries about the safety of yourself or loved ones
post traumatic stress (living through a terrifying event and then feeling unsafe, stressed and easily upset afterwards.)
2. Next, ask God to show you the physical symptoms of anxiety you feel.
One woman described the way she feels on an airplane. “I sit down and I can hardly breathe and my heart starts pounding. Then I get nauseated.” Anxiety can cause these very real physical symptoms:
rapid heart beat/difficulty breathing eating problems (too much or too little)
When these symptoms become overwhelming, you may feel like you’re having a medical emergency like a heart attack. This is may be a panic attack. Panic attacks are terrifying and afterwards most people avoid at all costs the types of situation that brought on the attack.
3. Pray for clarity to determine whether your anxiety is tied to specific fearful situations or is a chronic condition that has caused major disruption in your life.
Serious, generalized anxiety that doesn’t let up and disrupts your life may be an indication of an Anxiety Disorder, which is a treatable condition that requires the expertise of professionals such as doctors, counselors and psychiatrists for relief. Today there are a variety of therapies, group therapy and medications to treat Anxiety Disorder.
Dear God, I come to you today asking for your help and guidance with my anxiety and my feelings of extreme worry, mental discomfort, fear and dread. Here are the times, places and situations when these feelings bother me the most_______________________________________________________
When I am facing these situations, here are the mental and physical things that happen to me that are very distressing, draining and hard to handle_______________________________________________
I have tried different things in the past to try and make my anxiety go away. Here are some things that I have tried that didn’t seem to work_____________________________________________________. I thank you for the following things that that I have tried that seemed to have helped me _____________________________.
God, please show me how my anxiety is affecting my life and those around me. Here are some of things I used to do or would like to do that I don’t do because I’m avoiding situations that trigger my anxiety _______________________________________
I thank you that I do not have to handle my anxiety alone. I thank you that you always hear my cry and that you are always there with me in my time of distress as it says in the Bible:
“When I am in distress, I call to you, because you answer me.” Psalm 86:7 NIV
I thank you, Jesus, that you know how I feel because before you were arrested and killed, you felt so distressed that you sweated profusely as it says in the Bible:
“He (Jesus) took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. ‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,’ he said to them… And being in anguish, he (Jesus) prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.”( Mark 14:33,34; Luke 22:44 NIV.)
I thank you, God, that not only do you know and understand my anxiety, you actually share in my distress as it says in the Bible:
“In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.” Isaiah 63:9 NIV
With the strength I gain through knowing that you are here to help me, I now ask that you will guide me to the types of professional help that I may need to overcome my anxiety. Enable me to talk to my doctor about the physical symptoms that I have so I can put my fears to rest about having an underlying illness. If the cause seems to be anxiety, guide me to a good counselor, therapist, psychiatrist or other professional who can provide the therapy that’s necessary. If the professionals suggest medications, help me to accept this with an open mind remembering that you have provided medications as a means of healing. Now, please show me one step I can take today to find help the help I need ________________________________________________________________________________
Thank you, God, that with your help I believe that inner peace is possible. I want to learn to rely on you. I claim the promise that says,
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” Isaiah 26:3 NIV
Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27
I claim from your promises for a peaceful mind, an ability to trust you and the peace that you give me that enables me to have overcome fear.
I ask that you help me pray during my times of anxiety as I claim this promise:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:6,7
