80th Birthday Prayer

Dear God our creator,

We celebrate today our loved one and friend ___________________________.(name)  Thank you that they have attained this milestone of life having lived 80 years among us.

We thank you that before they were born, the days allotted to them were recorded in your book of life.

We know that your hand has been with them through their many days here on earth and will be with them during the many days yet ahead.

We thank you for the love they have poured out, the acts of service they have done and the wisdom they have shared.

We value their perspective.  We celebrate their achievements.  We honor their sacrifices.   We take joy and comfort in their presence.

We pray that they will be well and strong.  Help them to continue to dream your good dreams and to follow their heart.

May they know this day that they are honored, appreciated and loved.

May they enjoy a blessed and happy 80th birthday and may they enjoy many more birthdays to come.  Amen.

About this 80th Birthday Prayer

An 80th birthday can be a special time for family and friends to gather to honor their loved one.  Everyone at every age needs a time when others help them celebrate their life.  At age 80 people no longer are reaching the usual non-birthday life milestones such as birth of a child, engagements, marriage, work achievements or retirements.  That’s why many families use an 80th birthday as a time to honor the past, present and future and to share memories.

Birthdays also serve as reminders of the passing of time and the preciousness of each moment going forward.  In our busy lives, too often extended families only gather for sad occasions in the life of senior citizens, such as funerals or a medical crisis.  Making the most of positive celebrations is a way to stay close.

Bible verses used in this prayer:

All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.  (Psalm 139 : 16 NIV)

In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.  Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.  (Acts. 2:17 NIV)

Is not wisdom found among the aged?  Does not long life bring understanding?  (Job 12:12 NIV)

Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God.  I am the Lord.  ( Leviticus 19:32 NIV)
