This Chemotherapy Prayer is written for those who are supporting a loved one undergoing cancer treatment.  Caregivers are crucial in the treatment process and their lives are deeply affected.  Here is a chemotherapy prayer with Bible verses to support you as you help your loved one through chemo.

Chemotherapy Prayer When Your Loved One is Undergoing Cancer Treatment

Dear God, I’m feeling so many emotions while I’m watching my loved one receiving their chemo treatment.

Anger

Fear

Frustration

Sadness

Fatigue

I want to stay strong for my loved one as they go through chemo. I want to get my strength from you, God.  As it states in the following scriptures:

Strength Scriptures

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through him who gives me strength. (NIV)

Psalm 46: 1-3 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. (NIV)

Deuteronomy 31: 6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you or forsake you. (NIV)

Dealing with fear Scriptures

Lord, help me with my fear of the future. I know that I should be focused on the present, but I can’t stop my mind from jumping into the future. I don’t want to feel afraid of the unknown. Cancer has added a dimension of fear that I haven’t experienced before. As Scripture says about fear:

Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. (NIV)

Hebrews 13:6 So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.  What can mere mortals do to me?” (NIV)

Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (NIV)

Hope, Peace and Endurance Scriptures

My Lord, I claim the promise that my hope is in You, no matter what I’m going through. You are walking with me. I know that you will not leave me.

As stated in Proverbs 3: 5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (NIV)

Dear Father, I affirm the truth that peace comes from knowing You and that You provide strength and endurance.  May I feel your comfort so that I may feel renewed in my journey as a caregiver for my loved one.

I find my strength in the scriptures: John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”   (NIV)

Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (NIV)

James 1:12 “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” (NIV)

Amen

About This Chemotherapy Prayer

Cancer is a disease that has been fought by many people. This is a new journey for me as a caregiver to my husband who is undergoing chemotherapy. I have been thrust into a world of new terminologies, diagnoses, and treatment plans, as well as a barrage of emotions. We are called to be strong for our family member or friend and to pull that strength from distant places within us. We are called on to be positive and to keep the spirits buoyed of our loved one. It can require superhuman strength, at times.

After sitting in the infusion room week after week, I noticed the infusion chairs. They are comfortable lounge chairs in the front, but the back is open and looks quite different. All the wires and cords are exposed. It looks intimidating. The difference between the front and back serve to remind me that even though a cancer patient and/or caregiver may look fine on the outside, inside they may be a mess of emotions much like the wires and cords in the chairs. Putting up a brave front as a caregiver is what is expected, but it’s ok to realize that much may be going on inside of us.

There are many side effects from chemotherapy such as overwhelming nausea and vomiting, brain fog, and extreme fatigue, to name a few. Sometimes all you can do is hold the trashcan for your loved one and pray that the nausea stops soon.

This prayer is for all of you who have been holding hands and trash cans.

What The Experts Say About Cancer Treatment and Chemo

According to the National Cancer Institute there were estimated to be 2,001,140 new cases of cancer diagnosed in 2024. Chemotherapy is a common treatment for some types of cancer. It is used for two reasons: to treat cancer or to ease cancer symptoms.

According to the Cancer Hope Network, fear, anger, and loss of control are three deep seated emotional responses experienced by cancer patients. I would like to add that I believe these are also experienced by caregivers as well.

The American Cancer Society says taking care of someone getting chemo can be stressful.  Studies show that caregivers often neglect their own health. You must take care of yourself to give good care. This means eating well, getting enough exercise, getting medical care including cancer screenings and getting support when you need it.

Organizations such as the Stephens Ministry offer confidential support for people going through stressful times in their lives.

Other Scriptures for Chemotherapy Prayers

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 : Therefore we do not lose heart.  Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.  For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.  For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Romans 5: 3-5: Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character and character, hope.  And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

Isaiah 40:31: But those that hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.

Psalm 91.  Read the entire chapter.  Here are some selected verses from Psalm 91: 14-16: “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.  He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.  With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Psalm 56:3: When I am afraid, I will trust in you.
