Emotional wellbeing and good health can be increased exponentially by prayer.
In the world we live in today, where every image we see in magazines, on television and social media tells you to focus on looking good and being physically fit, many people struggle with how to have good health and emotional wellbeing. Taking care of your physical body and looking good is extremely important. It feels good when we are fit and physically healthy and it can add to a longer, fuller, more vibrant life.
The scriptures do tell us that our body is a temple to be used by God. “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19) This scripture speaks about wholeness which means caring for your body, mind and spirit.
We should not neglect or focus more on one and avoid the other parts of the temple that also need care. Sadly, enough many people do just that. They focus on the outward, but the inward is crying out for attention.
When we have emotional wellbeing, we have peace of mind and joy that flows from the inward being. It adds youthfulness, wisdom, and a healthy well-balanced life. According to 3 John 1:2 good health and emotional wellbeing are connected. Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.” For the believer to prosper and be in good health, which includes emotional wellbeing, we must allow room for our soul to prosper “to be healed and to be transformed.
My mom in the photo is a great example of one who is emotionally well and in good health. She turned 81 this year and is full of life and wisdom! She says that the key to growing old and staying youthful is to exercise regularly and to keep your mind active through the word and doing mind exercises like crossword puzzles. My prayer has been for her to always have the activity of her limbs and be in her right mind.
Prayerfully apply God’s truth to the process of regaining a sense of emotional wellbeing in your soul
Our soul houses all our emotions, our will, and our thoughts which arise from our life experiences, both good and bad. It has the power to bring life (emotional wellbeing) and it has the power to bring death (unstable, unbalance emotions). Cleansing our soul is removing the junk that has been piling up for years and making room for the spirit to fill us up with new and good things. “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) Though we become new in Christ once we accept him as our Lord and Savior there is still a process by which we reject the old things and accept and put on the new. It takes work!
Prayerfully apply God’s truth about watching over your heart
The bible teaches us that we are to watch over our heart. “Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23) Every believer is accountable to deal with the overall wellbeing of their soul condition. Its easy to tell ourselves that everything is ok with us. We don’t have any issues, it is everyone else who has a problem.
The bible also speaks about the wickedness of the heart “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? “I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds. (Jeremiah 17: 9-10)
Meditate on whether you are measuring your wellbeing by the world’s standards and not God’s
We all need to check the state of our wellbeing according to the word and not according to the world. You may be in good physical health, have a great job, own all the material things that would give a worldly impression that you have it all together but for the believer we must constantly check our place of wellbeing with the word of God and allow God to show us where we are and how to move forward.
The Book of James chapter 1 tells us that we are to be doers of the word and not merely hearers who do nothing with the word we have heard. “Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” (James 1:23-24)
Take the following steps in the process of becoming healthy and emotionally well
To begin the process of becoming healthy and emotionally well you must decide first that you want to be made whole.
Then, you must make time to read and study the word of God and pray daily.
Ask God to search your heart and to reveal to you any unresolved issues in your life that you may have buried deep within your soul. If you will admit it, there are some things God has already shown you.
Write down the things that have already been revealed to you and any new things the Holy Spirit reveals.
Search the scriptures and see what they say about each condition and begin to pray for healing and deliverance. Your soul will be released to begin to deal with these issues of life.
I have found that the first step toward being emotionally healthy is to be able to acknowledge that there is something wrong. That brings a certain level of release to the wellbeing of the soul. It may not be anything you can put a name to but an emotion or feeling that arises. If you ask the Holy Spirit, he will reveal the spirit by which it comes from.
I took a class many years ago called “Breaking Strongholds” I was drawn to the class because I wanted to be delivered from the addiction of cigarettes. One evening while reading the study lesson to prepare for the next class the Lord revealed to me that I was angry. As soon as the spirit revealed it to me, I was immediately able to spiritually see the “spirit of anger” and how it was operating in me and in my relationships. I was delivered immediately from the spirit of anger!
It was so liberating that I started including in my prayers and asking God to show me any area of deception and spiritual blindness in my life that I may be set free! I was beginning the process of moving toward good health and prospering even as my soul was prospering! I was not aware up until then that I operated in that spirit. “Who perceives his unintentional sins? Cleanse me from my hidden faults.” (Psalm 19:12)
It wasn’t until years later that God delivered me from my cigarette addition but thank God deliverance did come! God wanted to deal with that spirit and bring me healing.
Prayerfully put yourself in a position to be ready to receive insights from God
The process to which one is able prosper the soul means putting yourself in a position to be ready and willing to receive from God, what he wants to show you. He desires for his children to be cleansed and healed. “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:3)
The dangers of not dealing with the deeper issues of the heart and soul is that it leads to a very unhappy soul. It also inflicts pain on you and others around you. The heart and the soul are connected and affects every part of our life. The older you get, and the longer things go unresolved the sicker and more emotionally unstable you become. Therefore, many are full of bitterness, resentment, unforgiveness, jealously, and even strife because they have not prospered in their soul and found healing and deliverance for the issues of life.
Luke 6: 43-45 says, “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” A cleansed soul, leads to a healed heart, which leads to good health and emotional wellbeing. It ultimately leads to a fruit bearing tree that spills over into every area of your life. It leads to a healthier marriage, better friendships, promotion in the kingdom of God and at work, a closer family unit and relationships that flourish!
Prayer for Emotional Wellbeing and Good Health
Here is a short and simple prayer to help you to obtain wholeness, good health and emotional wellbeing.
I praise you for you are worthy to be praised! You are all powerful, all knowing, and all present. You know my beginning and my end. I know you have a perfect plan for my life and walk in it. I want my life to honor you and bring you glory. I am struggling with many issues of my heart. Things that have happened in my life over the years. There is a lot of bitterness and unforgiveness that I have pushed down deep within my soul and have refused to deal with and it has spilled over into every area of my life and relationships. I desire for you to help me today to begin to deal with these issues so that I can be healed and become the child of God you have called me to be. Your word says that my body is a temple to be used of the Lord “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19) I want to be made whole in body, mind, soul and spirit. I have nourished by body according to the worlds standards, but I want to nourish my body according the word. For it says that “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) I want to be a fruit bearing tree that bears good fruit in every area of my life.
In Jesus Name. Amen
