Here is a broken engagement prayer designed to help you express your feelings to God and to give you promises from the Scriptures to cling to as you go through the process of mourning and recovery.

Dear Jesus,

I bow before you today in need of healing and restoration from broken hopes and dreams following my broken engagement.  The plans that were made with such joy are gone and I find myself alone and mourning the loss of the person I thought I would be sharing my life with.   I cling to the fact that you understand what I’m going through as it says in Isaiah “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.” (Isaiah 53:3)  Thank you that you are listening as I honestly tell you how I’m feeling and what I’m thinking.

I am shocked that….

I find it hard to believe that…

I feel angry about…

My heart is broken because…

I wish that I could redo this…

The pain in my heart feels like…

I thank you that you reassure me that you are near to the broken hearted.  I cry out to you  with the words of the Psalms, “Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.  The troubles of my heart have multiplied; free me from my anguish.”  (Psalm 25:16,17)

“Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and my body with grief.” (Psalm 31:9)

“But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, ‘You are my god.’  My times are in your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me.  Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love.”  (Psalm 31:14-16)

I don’t know how to pray for my estranged fiance.  I have difficulty finding the thoughts or words to pray.  Strong Holy Spirit, please pray the things I am having difficulty praying for my ex-fiance as I wait and listen for your voice…

I pray that you will begin to renew a small spark of hope for my future into my heart.  Please rebuild in me the confidence to love again.  Help me to believe that your beautiful design for life partnerships remains the same today as it has been from the beginning of time in the Garden of Eden when you said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.  I will make a helper suitable for him.”  (Genesis 2:18)  I pray that even now you are preparing a partner suited for me in every way.  Open my eyes to the possibilities and give me a discerning heart to perceive your unfolding plans.

I thank you that Jesus himself never married here on earth and yet one of his titles is “the Bridegroom” and all of us who believe in him are called his bride.  Thank you, Jesus, that you are the one who loves me with everlasting joy.  Help me to rest in your presence during my times of singleness and aloneness.  Thank you that you say, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”  (Matthew 28:20)

Thank you for hearing my prayer.  Please bear me up daily.  In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
